Flight Arrivals at Birmingham Airport
Passengers arriving at Birmingham Airport will find one large terminal building that handles all arrivals and departures for domestic and international flights. The airport used to consist of two terminal buildings, but has recently re-developed the airport buildings to form just one large terminal. The merge of the two terminals are hoped to increase the efficiency of the airport operations, and ease the flow of passengers within the building. Departing passengers will now use the new combined check-in and security control area, while passengers landing at the airport will arrive in one large meet and greet service area.
Birmingham is served by a number of airline companies, and is a base for BMI, Monarch Airlines, Ryanair, Flybe, Thomson Airways and Bmibaby. Ryanair handles the majority of passengers at the airport, while Flybe has the most flights at the destination. The airline companies fly from various domestic and international destinations.
Arriving passengers will find various services at Birmingham Airport. Those who have a little time can browse the shopping outlets on the landside of the airport, or stop for a bite to eat at one of the restaurants or bars available. There are ATM's throughout the terminal and currency exchange booths to assist with money related matters, and the Business Point for various business services. There are four meeting rooms for business functions, one of which is a 40-seater theater style venue, while some of the others are more private 8 seater boardroom style rooms. The rooms are equipped with various useful items, and additional equipment and catering services can also be requested.
Further facilities at Birmingham Airport include a prayer room, a Lost Property office, which will collect any item of lost property, found at the airport or on board an aircraft, baggage trolleys and the Visitor Center. The Visitor Center is located nearby the arrivals area, and provides information on local attractions, hotels, events, transport in Birmingham and plenty of useful advice. The Visitor Center is a great place for tourists to stop and plan their itineraries before heading off to Birmingham city. Birmingham offers a huge variety of interesting attractions, including museums, amusement parks, zoos and aquariums, Cadbury World and journeys on the famous old and beautifully restored steam trains. It is the second largest city in England, and receives thousands and thousands of visitors every year.
There are lots of hotels and other types of accommodation available in the city, and nearby the airport as well. Hotels located only a few miles from the airport include the Holiday Inn Airport, the Novotel Hotel, Crown Plaza NEC, Express by Holiday Inn Birmingham NEC, the Hilton Birmingham Metropole and the Travelodge Birmingham East. There are also many centrally located hotels about 11 km from the airport, which include a mixture of chain establishments and other smaller and more privately owned guest houses. Birmingham does not offer any youth hostels, but there are a number of less expensive hotels worth considering, such as the Ashdale House Hotel and the Ibis Hotel. More luxurious establishments include the Jury’s Inn on Broad Street and the Awentsbury Hotel along Serpentine Road.
Birmingham city is home to over a million people, a few historical buildings of interest and many more modern and stylish business developments. There is a large area restricted to pedestrians only in the heart of the city, while the majority of the city’s shops are located along New Street. Some of the more popular shopping areas include Birmingham’s City Plaza, the Palisades, and the new Bull Ring complex. Around the center of the city, visitors will find the areas of Centenary Square, Symphony Hall and the Gas Street Basin.
Passengers arriving at Birmingham can continue their journey by bus, train, taxi or rental car. There are many quality car hire companies with rental counters at Birmingham airport. These companies include Avis, Budget, Hertz, National, Europcar, Enterprise, Auto Europa, Alamo and Easycar. A taxi rank with the official black taxicabs can be found outside the arrivals area. As well as bus stops for local buses travelling to Birmingham city and the longer distance coach services operated by National Express and Megabus, which provide comfortable transport to all major cities in England. The Birmingham International Train Station is very close to the airport, and connected to the terminal by the free AirRail Link service. Trains run every ten minutes to the Birmingham New Street Railway Station.
The airport is equipped for the arrival of disabled, or reduced mobility passengers, and also offers various facilities for hearing and visually impaired passengers. Most passengers agree that the location offers all services needed for a pleasant arrival.
